Duplicati

Free, encrypted backups with a web interface.

Duplicati is free backup software with a web interface. It encrypts your files on your computer (AES-256) before it uploads them, and runs backups on a schedule. It stores them in a Zata bucket through its S3 Compatible storage type.

Tested with Duplicati 2.x (command line, duplicati-cli) on Zata (Indore) in October 2026, including a restore.

Before you start

  • A bucket. See Create a bucket.
  • An access key from the same region as the bucket. See Access keys.
  • Duplicati installed. Its web interface usually opens at http://localhost:8200.

Connection settings

SettingValue
Storage typeS3 Compatible
Use SSLOn
ServerChoose the custom server URL option and enter idr01.zata.ai for Indore or bom01.zata.ai for Mumbai (no https://)
BucketYour bucket name, for example my-bucket
Folder pathA folder inside the bucket for this backup, for example duplicati/laptop
AWS Access Key ID / AWS Secret Access KeyFrom Access Keys in the Zata console. The key must be from the same region as the bucket.

Leave the other options at their defaults.

Set up Duplicati

1

Add a backup

Open the Duplicati web interface, click Add backup, and start a new backup.

2

Name it and set encryption

Enter a name. Keep the encryption on AES-256 (the default) and enter a strong passphrase.

Save the passphrase somewhere safe. Without it the backup cannot be restored, and Zata cannot recover it.

3

Choose the source data

Tick the folders and files to back up.

On Duplicati versions older than 2.4, the destination step comes before the source step. The fields are the same.

4

Set Zata as the destination

Choose S3 Compatible and fill in the fields from the table above. Click Test destination, then Continue.

5

Set a schedule

Keep the built-in scheduler on and choose a time, for example daily at 02:00.

6

Choose retention and save

Keep the remote volume size at 50 MB. Choose a retention, for example Smart backup retention. Click Submit, then Run now for the first backup.

Test it

Click Restore, pick the backup, select a few files, and restore them to another folder. A backup is only proven when a restore works.

Command line (optional)

The same backup with duplicati-cli:

Back up
duplicati-cli backup "s3://my-bucket/duplicati/laptop" /home/me/Documents \
--s3-server-name=idr01.zata.ai --use-ssl=true \
--aws-access-key-id=YOUR_ACCESS_KEY --aws-secret-access-key=YOUR_SECRET_KEY \
--passphrase=YOUR_BACKUP_PASSPHRASE

Restore one folder to another place:

Restore
duplicati-cli restore "s3://my-bucket/duplicati/laptop" "/home/me/Documents/projects/*" \
--restore-path=/tmp/restore \
--s3-server-name=idr01.zata.ai --use-ssl=true \
--aws-access-key-id=YOUR_ACCESS_KEY --aws-secret-access-key=YOUR_SECRET_KEY \
--passphrase=YOUR_BACKUP_PASSPHRASE

Troubleshooting

ProblemFix
Test destination fails with a certificate or connection errorCheck that Use SSL is on and Server is only idr01.zata.ai (or bom01.zata.ai), without https://.
Access denied or invalid keyCopy the keys again from Access Keys, without extra spaces. The key must be able to use this bucket.
Bucket not foundUse the server of the region the bucket is in.
The passphrase does not work when you restoreIt must be exactly the passphrase you set for the backup. It cannot be reset.
