From Google Drive

Copy your files from Google Drive to Zata with rclone.

Use rclone to copy files from Google Drive to a Zata bucket. You connect rclone to your Google account once in the browser, then copy with one command.

The Zata settings on this page were tested with rclone v1.75.2 on Zata in October 2026. The Google Drive steps follow rclone’s documentation.

Before you start

  • A Zata bucket, and a Zata access key from the same region. See Create a bucket and Access keys.
  • rclone on a computer with a web browser. Install the latest version from rclone.org.

1. Add the Zata remote

For a bucket in Mumbai, use https://bom01.zata.ai as the endpoint.

rclone config create zata s3 provider=Other access_key_id=YOUR_ACCESS_KEY secret_access_key=YOUR_SECRET_KEY region=us-east-1 endpoint=https://idr01.zata.ai force_path_style=true no_check_bucket=true sign_accept_encoding=false

Zata needs sign_accept_encoding=false (without it, every command fails with SignatureDoesNotMatch) and no_check_bucket=true (needed for sub-user keys). To set up the remote step by step instead, see rclone on Linux.

2. Add the Google Drive remote

Run rclone config and answer the questions:

When rclone asksType
e/n/d/r/c/s/q>n
name>gdrive
Storage>drive
client_id> and client_secret>press Enter
scope>drive.readonly (read-only is enough to copy)
service_account_file>press Enter
Edit advanced config?n
Use web browser to automatically authenticate rclone with remote?y. Your browser opens: sign in to Google and select Allow.
Configure this as a Shared Drive (Team Drive)?n (or y to copy a shared drive)
Keep this "gdrive" remote?y
e/n/d/r/c/s/q>q

Check that it works: rclone lsd gdrive: lists the folders in your Drive.

  • On a server without a browser, answer n to the web browser question and follow rclone’s instructions: you run rclone authorize "drive" on a computer with a browser and paste the result back.
  • With an empty client_id, rclone uses a shared Google client that can be slow for large drives. For big migrations, make your own client ID.

Your rclone config file holds your Google sign-in token and your Zata keys. Never share it or paste it into a ticket or a chat.

3. Copy your files

This copies all of My Drive into a google-drive folder in the bucket. Replace my-bucket with your bucket name.

rclone copy gdrive: zata:my-bucket/google-drive --progress
  • To copy one folder only, name it: rclone copy gdrive:Projects zata:my-bucket/Projects --progress.
  • Google Docs, Sheets and Slides are saved as .docx, .xlsx and .pptx files.
  • Files that others shared with you are not in My Drive. To copy them, add --drive-shared-with-me.
  • copy skips files that are already in the bucket, so if it stops halfway, run the same command again.

copy leaves your files in Google Drive. rclone move deletes each file from Google Drive after it is uploaded, and needs the scope drive instead of drive.readonly. Copy first and check the result before you delete anything.

4. Check the result

Compare the number of files on both sides:

rclone size gdrive:
rclone size zata:my-bucket/google-drive

The total size can differ a little, because Google Docs files only get a size when they are exported.

Troubleshooting

ProblemFix
SignatureDoesNotMatch or 403 Forbidden on every Zata commandRun rclone config update zata sign_accept_encoding=false (rclone v1.66 or newer).
AccessDenied when copying to ZataRun rclone config update zata no_check_bucket=true. If it still fails, check that the key may write to the bucket.
InvalidAccessKeyId or NoSuchBucket on ZataThe key, the endpoint and the bucket must all be in the same region. See Wrong endpoint or region.
The Google sign-in expiredRun rclone config reconnect gdrive: and sign in again.
